Certificate of Occupancy Guide
Before calling for an inspection for a certificate of occupany for a single family residence, the following requirements must be met:
- foundation, framing, and insulation inspections must be completed and approved
- final plumbing and electrical inspections must be completed and approved
- there must be a fuel storage permit
- there must be a certificate of compliance for the septic system
- a working kitchen sink
- impervious floors in kitchen and bath
- no exposed kraft-faced insulation
- handrail on at least one side of steps having more than 2 risers
- guardrails(36" from landing-minimum) for all landings or stairs with a landing more than 30" from floor or grade
At the time of inspection, the following is a list of some of the items that will be checked for compliance:
- if there is an attached garage, proper fire separation between house and garage
- attic and crawl space ventilation and access
- window and door sizes, location, and u-value
- bathroom ventilation
- stairway rise, run, and headroom
- ceiling height
- interior and exterior handrails and guardrails
- location and operation of smoke detectors
- chimney and fireplace clearances
- completion of siding and roofing
- deck and porch construction
If the final inspection is successful, the building permit will be taken to the office and a certificate of occupancy will be mailed to the homeowner or agent.
