Project Overview
The Franklin Regional Council of Governments (FRCOG) secured $150,000 in funding from the FY 2002 Transportation Demand Management (TDM) Program for a project called Share the Road in the Connecticut River Valley. Share the Road in the Connecticut River Valley is intended to increase accessibility and awareness for commuting by bicycle in Franklin, Hampshire and Hamden Counties. The project includes the purchase and installation of share the road and specially designed Franklin County Bikeway logo/trailblazing signs along shared roadway bicycle routes that have been identified as a part the Franklin County Bikeway, a regional bikeway system. The project also includes the development of video, radio and internet based media and publicity tools, which will encourage and promote the use of bicycles as a viable means of transportation in the Connecticut River Valley. In addition, the project includes the purchase and distribution of bicycle parking racks throughout Franklin County.
Current Activities
This project is nearly complete. During the fall of 2005, bike racks were purchased and distributed to the towns in Franklin County for installation at important public sites in the communities. Twenty-two of the twenty-six towns in Franklin County requested and received the bike racks. A small number of additional bike racks are still available. Contact Elizabeth Giannini for more information about how you may be able to recieve the racks.
In addition, the FRCOG has identified specific locations where the Franklin County Bikeway logo/trailblazing signs will be installed along the shared roadway bicycle routes that have been identified as a part the Franklin County Bikeway. These locations are currently being reviewed by MassHighway, and it is intended that the purchase and installation of the sign will be completed during the Spring of 2008.
Finally, the FRCOG worked with a local filmmaker to develop "Enjoy the Ride", a 30-minute inspirational documentary on bicycling in the Connecticut River Valley, and several radio, television and internet public service announcements. In addition, promotional tee shirts and legs wraps were produced, and will be distributed at local events over the next year.
Future Plans
A Franklin County Bikeway Map is under development and will be available for distribution near the end of the 2007 calendar year. In addition, work to update the Franklin County Bikeway Plan and include routes to new destinations will commence in 2008.
