Transportation Enhancement Program
Number 10 - a historic local trolley car restored through the Transportation Enhancements Program.
Project Overview
The Transportation Enhancements Program was created through Federal Transportation Legislation. The program funds projects and activities that relate to transportation but go beyond what is considered a traditional transportation project. Projects that are eligible to receive Transportation Enhancement Funding include: bicycle and pedestrian facilities and educational activities; acquisition of scenic easements and scenic or historic sites; scenic or historic highway programs; landscaping and other beautification; historic preservation; rehabilitation and operation of historic transportation buildings, structures or facilities; preservation of abandoned railway corridors; control and removal of outdoor advertising; archaeological documentation and research; environmental mitigation in certain circumstances and the establishment of transportation museums. The FRCOG has worked with the towns of Franklin County to advance a variety of Transportation Enhancement Projects.
Current Activities
Recently completed Enhancements projects include the Conway Streetscape and the Millers Falls Streetscape. Work is currently underway to complete the design for a town common and streetscape in Northfield that may be funded as both an Enhancment and Scenic Byway Project.
Future Plans
All approved Transportation Enhancement projects for the region have been completed. For a time, there was a significant backlog in projects due to more requests than available funding. Stiff competition for transportation funds remains, however the opportunity to advance a few small Enhancements project may exist. In 2008 FRCOG staff will review the potential to fund some Enhancements, and a project solitication will take place if deemed feasible.
